Not since the great Ray Charles burst into the musical firmament has an entertainer illuminated contemporary music with the brilliance of Lou Rawls.  Having a string of smash hit albums to his credit, Lou approaches the materials in tis album with supreme confidence and self-assuredness of a "star."  He knows what to do.  He knows he's right.  And when you know you're right, you an hardly ever go wrong.  And the combining of Lou Rawls with H.B. Barnum's music is a stroke of genius or good fortune (or both) unparalleled since someone at Capitol thought of putting Nelson Riddle together with Frank Sinatra.

What great things to come out of Lou Rawls and what amazing things he has done for this record.

It definitely felt like Summer when I decided to play this record first thing in the morning.  That was, of course, until I stepped outside to about 40 degrees of cold weather smacking me in my face.  The sixth album by SURF ROCKERS The Beach Boys, All Summer Long is very in tune with the Summer and being on the beach.  I guess that is why you would categorize them as Surf Rock, which is a term I laugh at because I guess you can pretty much name any type of rock.  Brian Wilson is pretty much the mastermind behind all of The Beach Boys' hits.  Such a talented writer and musician.

To a band that I discovered online, spread the word to a friend and a week later we saw them live.  Nearly ripping my face off with their enormous sound, And So I Watch You From Afar (ASIWYFA) just released their third album on Sargent House Records.  They have a unique post-rock with a little bit of a math rock vibe. I do have to say, after seeing them and buying a shirt, to this day, months later, I still wear that shirt almost every day.

Just a short blurb I wanted to write about before getting into this album, which by the way is magnificent.  Today, as I was roaming around the streets of Austin, I realized I have ONE MORE MONTH left if this year long expedition.  To think that it almost seemed like yesterday that I started this and realized it was going to be such an enjoyable trek.  THREE HUNDRED THIRTY-FOUR albums I've listened to from April 20th, 2012 until today.  I can honestly say that this has been a commitment I've enjoyed and I will be sad when it comes to an end.  But don't cry tears of joy now because we have thirty-one records left to enjoy together.

I can't take all the credit for today's choice since it came from the immaculate collection of my roommates.  He gave me a few records to pick from and when I started flipping through them, this one caught my eye.  One, being The Flaming Lips and two, the cover tripped me out because there is a baby on it holding the guitar with laser eyes in the colors of the rainbow.  For those of you who do not know much of who The Flaming Lips are, they are such a fun, trippy, psychedelic and unpredictable band.  For a band as experimental as The Flaming Lips to cover Pink Floyd's 1973 masterpiece The Dark Side of the Moon, you have to tip your hat to them.  I say that because I believe, Pink Floyd's rendition of The Dark Side of the Moon is so perfect and amazing and for a band like The Flaming Lips to cover it, they did a spectacular job.  Incorporating acts like Henry Rollins and Peaches (who is a favorite of mine) with Stardeath and White Dwarfs, this album is a great cover.  Every song, from the first to the last, puts a perfect pitch on each song.  From the trippy sounds to the clear vinyl it came on.

To like is to like and to love is to love.  With like, it's something you can tolerate or accept for a brief period of time, but to love is something you are willing to withstand through the test of time.  I like a lot of artists and their music, but it takes something special for me to love it and I know that I love Mogwai.  I think the more I listen to post-rock, the more I appreciate music without lyrics.  Hearing the sounds of the instruments; guitar, drums, bass allows you to make up what you wish to think about at that moment.  Mogwai's sixth album, The Hawk is Howling is one of those albums.

Takin' It Back....WAY BACK

Three Hundred Twenty

Artist - Joe Tex
Album - Soul Country
Released - 1968
Label - Atlantic
Genre - Folk/Soul/Country

Tracks:
Side One
I'll Never Do You Wrong
Ode to Billie Joe
The Dark End of the Street
Funny How Time Slips Away
Engine Engine Number Nine
Side Two
Skip A Rope
Green Green Grass of Home
Set Me Free
By The Time I Get to Phoenix
Honey

The similarities between R&B and country music are deeper than generally realized by adherents of either field.  Country songs, like R&B songs are about events that touch the minds and hearts of ordinary people.  The main subject matter for both forms of music is love: love that brings joy or love that brings pain, love requited and love unrequited, young love, jealous love, true love.  Country songs may be more descriptive, R&B songs are more emotional.  But both tell it like it is -- without pretense, without adornment.

Perhaps that is why Joe Tex, one of the country's greatest R&B stars, whose recordings have graced the top of the best-selling charts throughout the world, can sing outstanding country hits of the past year and invest them with such warmth and feeling that in spite of their familiarity they sound fresh and new again.  It takes an extraordinary performer like Joe Tex to revitalize Bobbie Gentry's Ode to Billie Joe, Glenn Campbell's By The Time I Get To Phoenix, or Bobby Goldsboro's Honey, let alone such well known country standards as Engine Engine Number None, Funny How Time Slips Away, Green Green Grass of Home and Set Me Free.

It is not surprising that Joe Tex should turn to country material for this new album.  He is closer to the country field tat most soul artists.  One of his earliest idols was Hank Williams.  His record company, Dial Records, is based in Nashville.  He has recorded all of his hits in Nashville, from Hold What You Got to Skinny Legs and All.  And Joe Tex's record produced, Buddy Killen, is one of the owners of a most successful music publishing firm, Tree Music, which handles a large number of top country songwriters.  (The other owner of Tree is Jack Stapp.)

In addition to the well known country songs in this album, there is a new Joe Tex song, I'll Never Do You Wrong.  Joe is a famous for his songs as his hit records; almost all of his hit singles (and he has had 20 in a row) have contained his own material.  I'll Never Do You Wrong adds another hit to his string.  This album adds a new facet to Joe Tex's career; it stakes out and validates his claim to "Soul Country."

Quite recently, the 12 strong guitar has come into its own.  The utilization of the instrument, by Eric Darling in the hit recording "Walk Right In," has a lot to do with bringing it to the attention of the music minded public.  This is not to say however, that the instrument was completely forgotten over the past years.  As a matter of fact, performers such as Huddie Ledbetter used it regularly for many, many years.

It has been said that the 12 string guitar is the perfect instrument for interpreting the blues.  The instrument is a most difficult one to play as the motion that is required to ordinarily strike one string, results in the simultaneous sound of two strings.  In this recording, the vocal boss of the blues, Jimmy Reed, displays his unique talents not only with the familiar Jimmy Reed harmonica sound, but with the 12 string guitar.  The same soul searching feeling of Jimmy Reed, the vocal great, is transmitted by Jimmy Reed the 12 string guitar and harmonica great.

Indeed, Jimmy Reed equals greatness.  His guitar playing, his sound and everything in between is just so wonderful.

The sixth album by California punk rockers Ceremony, Zoo capitalizes on the era of punk into the mainstream of today.  I stumbled upon this band when I went to see No Age at Beauty Bar Austin last year.  Little did I know I would be walking into an ear opening sounds.  I'm not entirely into punk, but I do appreciate good punk music.  Usually, for me, I can tell if I like a song the first few seconds of listening, but when it's live, I like to get a feel for the band itself and the crowd.  If it were up to me, I'd listen to music live, then buy the album but for the most part, the bands that I like are bother great live and in concert.  When I stood in the crowd to listen to this band, I was very impressed with what they had to offer.  Of course, as soon as I got home, I got the album and listened to it in its entirety.  Pleasantly surprised, Hysteria ended up on my workout playlist.  Just a good listen will satisfy your needs.
